Hello Beautiful People!

I have had the pleasure of spending time with a talented young Entrepreneur, Marie Mercurius, who is the proprietor of The Closet Maven.  I attended one of Marie’s seminars on space organization: it was an informative session, and her presentation was lively and interactive.  If your closet is overran with too many bags, shoes, dresses, skirts, shirts, pants, sweaters and hats, I would encourage you to follow Marie on social media or book an appointment for a session with her to become organized.

Marie was involved in the creative arts from a young age, where she played the flute and drums in high school and pursued performing as a singer and dancer.

She hosted a weekly radio show for eight years, which gave her a good taste of broadcasting, an industry she never inspired to work in but found a love for. She would love to parlay that into TV hosting her own edutainment show.  Marie says being creative is what fulfills her and her business allows her to do that. She helps to de-clutter and organize closets for women so that getting dressed is an enjoyable experience. A wardrobe that is properly stored and well-cared for ensures a great return on your investment.

Here are five great tips Marie would like to leave with you, on how to store your out of season clothing:

1. Place all of your summer clothes in a pile so you can conduct an end of season audit. Anything that no longer fits, is uncomfortable to wear or you don’t feel confident in should be donated.

2.  Make sure everything that will be stored is clean. Check for stains (stains sitting for an extended period of time may be more difficult to remove), missing buttons, loose hems and broken zippers.

3.  Places to store your clothes:

  • Under the bed – use low totes preferably made of cotton or canvas with lids as they allow your clothes to breathe better than plastic totes. You need at least 6” of space under your bed.
  • Back of the closets – breathable garment bags, cotton, bamboo are your best bet. Again, try to avoid plastic or nylon. These are ideal for dresses or items that you’d like to keep wrinkle free.
  • On closet shelf – storage boxes with lids, preferably fabric lined ones. These can be labeled on the front to find things quickly and can be stacked.
  • Under a dresser – if you have room.

4. Be sure to add lavender scented sachets or cedar balls to stave off any unwanted guests and to keep everything smelling fresh.

5.  When it comes to footwear, check heels for missing lifts and soles to make sure they are in good shape. Anything that needs to be repaired can go in a separate pile.

  • Make sure they are clean before storing.
  • You can use plastic, acrylic shoe boxes or the original shoe boxes to store them. If using plastic, I suggest lining them with tissue paper for added protection. Label boxes for visibility and store under your bed or on shelves in your closet.
  • Under bed canvas shoe organizers are another option.
